Permits and Forms


For the health, safety, and economic vitality of the City of Mendota, various permits are required and the full list is available below.

Also below are various forms and request forms available for download.

Building Inspections

As of June 3, 2024, the City of Mendota has adopted the following:

  • 2021 International Building Code (2021 IBC)

  • 2021 International Residential Code (2021 IRC)

  • 2021 International Existing Building Code (2021 IEBC)

  • 2021 International Fire Code (2021 IFC)

  • 2021 International Mechanical Code (2021 IMC)

  • 2021 International Fuel Gas Code (2021 IFGC)

  • 2021 International Property Maintenance Code (2021 IPMC)

  • 2021 International Swimming Pool and Spa Code (2021 ISPSC)

  • 2021 Life Safety Code (2021 NFPA 101)

  • The Il. State Plumbing Code, as adopted/amended by Il.

  • 2020 National Electric Code (2020 NEC or NFPA 70)

  • Il. Energy Conservation Code, as adopted/amended by Illinois

  • Illinois Accessibility Code, as adopted/amended by Illinois.

Commercial and rental unit* building work MUST be completed by
city-registered licensed contractors, except for minor interior renovations that do not alter structures or expose framing.
*Owner-occupied rental units are considered residential. 

All contractors performing work in the City of Mendota MUST be registered with the City. All licenses expire and must be renewed May 1 of each year. 

Building permits are required for new construction, improvements that change the footprint of the existing building, or alter the structure. 

Other Required Permits:

  • Decks, sheds, and garages

  • Driveways, sidewalks, and poured patios

  • Roof

  • Fence (over 4' tall)

  • Swimming pool
    (Above 48" deep / in-ground)

  • Solar Systems

  • Electrical/Plumbing

NOTE: Work cannot begin until a building permit has been issued. Permit must be displayed and viewable by the street. Work may be stopped and violations may be issued if permits are not acquired as required.
